The best books about period and cycles for children and adults

At Flow, we believe that knowledge is a superpower - especially when it comes to our bodies, cycles and the topics that are all too often wrapped up and put away because they are still (yawn) surrounded by taboo. That's why we've put together a small library of books we wish we had when we were younger. Books that dare to say things out loud - and that can both give you aha moments, laughs and the courage to take the conversation further.
The books are honest, funny, in-depth and all written by authors who are passionate about making it easier to talk about period, puberty, fertility and cycles.

Below you will find an overview of our small but quite nice (if we do say so ourselves) library.

Written by Simone Mervig

It's just blood.

By Louise T. Sjørvad & Jette Sandbæk, illustrated by Louise Rosenkrands.

A heartwarming and colorful guide to the first years of your period. Here you will find answers to questions such as: How often should I change my pad? Why do I get sad? Is it normal to have clots in my blood? At the same time, other children and young people share their stories and advice about having their period, so you never feel alone.

The book works its way through all topics related to menstruation from the ABC's. It is easy to read and good as the very first literary encounter with menstruation. That is why it is also part of our Happy Period kit .

The Girl's Book

By Nina Brochmann & Ellen Støkken Dahl, illustrated by Magnhild Winsnes.

A comprehensive guide to puberty, filled with everything from pimples, breasts and falling in love to boundaries, emotions and sexuality. The girls' book is written by the two Norwegian doctors behind the bestseller The Joy of Vagina , who here provide another loving helping hand to curious tweens and teens (from about 12 years old) - and their adults.

The girls' book goes a step deeper and is more text-heavy than, for example, It's Just Blood. It's aimed at young people who want to know even more - and it also touches on topics like falling in love, skin problems, and healthy boundary setting. We think it's pretty fantastic.

Red is beautiful

By Lucia Zamolo. Handwritten and illustrated by the author herself (quite impressive to write in Danish when she is German).

A poetic and thought-provoking book about the taboos of menstruation. Why do we blush when a tampon falls out of our bag? Why do we say “I’m sick” when we’re actually having cramps? Red is Beautiful asks the questions we all know, and reminds us how crazy it is that we’re still silent about blood.

Here we almost have a little piece of art. Every page is a pleasure to look at. It is a great pleasure to look through it. You get a mix of easily digestible knowledge, mixed with Lucia's own experiences of getting her first period. A really nice book that, very much in the spirit of Flow, focuses on blood - and why it is still so taboo. There is food for thought. Good for ages 10 and up.

All about your period

A fun, honest and richly illustrated guide for children, tweens and teens. All About Your Period acts almost like a big sister, giving you all the answers you don't necessarily get in school with warmth and humor: from the luteal phase and ovulation to feelings, body and pain. A perfect handbook for all new or upcoming menstruators.

Books about fertility treatment

Heart child

By Cathrine Widunok Wichmand - Flow's own founder.

A raw and moving autobiographical story about fertility treatment, love, grief and hope. Cathrine gives a rare honest insight into the emotional journey of waiting, hoping and fighting to become parents. A book for adults who are in treatment themselves, who want to understand the process (and the feelings) more closely. But also super nice to read for relatives to better understand what is at stake when undergoing treatment.

Miracle Boy Eddie

By Cathrine Widunok Wichmand, illustrated by Pauline Drasbæk.

How do you explain to a child how it came to be? And even harder: When the path to it has gone through fertility treatment. And how do you tell the story to your children?
Miracle Boy Eddie is a warm and humorous read-aloud book based on a real conversation between Cathrine and her son Eddie. The book is a loving starting point for talking to 4-7 year olds about life's small (and big) miracles.

Should we call it a little feminist library?
