What do you know about vaginal discharge?
Discharge is something everyone with a uterus experiences from puberty and throughout life. It can vary in amount, color, and consistency — and it can also change during different phases of the cycle or, for example, during pregnancy.
The consistency of discharge changes throughout the cycle and can tell you where you are. Whether it’s thin and watery, ‘stretchy’ and egg-white-like during ovulation, or almost dry, your discharge can show you what stage of the cycle you’re in.
Discharge is the body’s way of keeping the vagina clean and healthy. It flushes away dead cells, dirt, and bacteria, keeps the mucous membranes moist, and maintains a slightly acidic pH, which protects against infections. That’s why you don’t need to wash internally - the body takes care of it on its own.
Discharge contains lactic acid bacteria, which keep the pH low and the vagina healthy. This gives it the naturally slightly acidic smell and taste (and sometimes also stains on your underwear that don’t come out in the wash). The smell should not be unpleasant, but if it suddenly changes or becomes very strong, it’s a good idea to contact your doctor.
Discharge is a useful indicator of health. If the color, odor, consistency, or amount changes significantly, it could be a sign of infection or irritation. If you experience itching, burning, or pain, you should contact your doctor.
What is our relationship with discharge?
We asked you about your relationship with discharge — maybe you can relate?
“Something I’ve always seen as annoying (and sometimes still do), but I’ve learned to love it, as it has helped me understand my cycle after 15 years of irregular cycles and PCOS. I became easily pregnant with my second child thanks to this understanding.”
“Now I’m actually neutral? But when I was younger, I found it so embarrassing, especially if others could see it in my underwear — for example during PE or when the clothes were in the laundry.”
“I once dated a man who stopped in the middle of sex because he saw that I had white discharge. He was convinced I had an infection. I was extremely embarrassed. He refused to believe that it’s completely natural for it to be white.”
“Super annoying. I always wear panty liners, otherwise my underwear is more or less damp.”
“My discharge also tells me if my pH down there is out of balance.”
